Dr Nilesh Nilkanth Oak is a world-renowned Indian history researcher based in the United States. He is particularly famous for his research on determining the timelines of the Ramayan and Mahabharat. Using Astronomy, references from ancient Texts, and internal consistency, he explains ancient history in a highly scientific manner. This is why he is considered a strong advocate of Hindutva (Hindu Dharma).
He has received –
1. ‘Pride of America’
2. ‘Surabharati Samupasak Samman’ Awards

Special Column

The sacrifice of the soldiers and generals for the Hindavi Swarajya as envisaged by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj is supreme. Similarly, in the present times, many devout Hindus and patriotic citizens of this country have been striving to protect the Nation & Dharma.
The ‘Hindutva Warriors’ is a series of Articles that sheds light on their lives and struggles to protect Hindu Dharma. We hope that this serves as a catalyst for the mission of establishing the ‘Hindu Rashtra’ and inspires many others. – Editor
Early life and education

I was born in a small village, Borgaon, in Ratnagiri District (Parashurama Kshetra), in the Konkan region of Maharashtra. I went to different schools in various villages of the Konkan area until I passed my 10th grade. I did my junior college in science stream and undergraduate engineering education in Mumbai (Parle college and then UDCT/ICT for Chemical engineering). I went to Canada for my MS in Chemical engineering. Presently, I am working at the Institute of Advanced Sciences in the USA.
2. Research on Dharma and Hindutva, as well as the time period of Ramayan and the Mahabharat
The basic understanding that society has done a lot for you and whatever little service of Dharma one does is but a small repayment to society – this was inculcated by my parents right from my childhood. I was a voracious reader and curious individual from childhood. Naturally, I read and thought a lot. This led me to study a lot of subjects in search of answers to my ever-growing list of questions. I included study of various sciences, religions and philosophies at an early age. My last 35+ years of research work emerges from this background.

I commenced the work of the accurate and precise dating of Mahabharat, followed by that of Ramayan. Mine was the first scientific and logical effort in its truest sense and this resulted in validation of my work via enormous multidisciplinary scientific evidence from 20+ different branches of science. My additional work includes establishing deep antiquity for Indian Astronomy, Agriculture, Navigation, domestication of animals, empirical sciences, philosophy, Darshan-shastra and Indian foundations of linguistics. My current work explores connecting the dots between Astronomy, Astrology, Agriculture, Navigation, Philosophy, Linguistics, Chemistry, Ayurveda, Music and more.

3. Inspiration to tread the path of Dharma-related research from the mission of Saints and others
The biographical narrations of the likes of Great Maharashtrian Saints (Sant Jnaneshwar Maharaj, Jagadguru Sant Tukaram Maharaj, Sant Namdev Maharaj, Sant Ekanath Maharaj, Samarth Ramdas Swami, etc.), modern thinkers and activists such as Lokmanya Tilak, Swatantryaveer Savarkar, Acharya Vinoba Bhave, Brahmarshi (Dr) Padmakar Vishnu Vartak, Param Pujya Varadanand Bharati (Prof. Anant Damodar Athavale of the old), Dharampal, Brahmachaitanya Gondavalekar Maharaj, Dr Keshav Baliram Hedgewar of the RSS and of many others played a great role in my life. Thought processes and writings of Joseph Campbell, Karl Popper, Henri David Thoreau, Seneca, Montaigne had significant influence in my thinking. In the recent times, I have obtained insights from the likes of Shri. Neeraj Atri, Shri. Rajiv Malhotra, Shri. J Saideepak Iyer among others.

Importance and relevance of Dnyanyog in today’s times of AI
Nothing is possible without Shraddha and nothing is possible without Prajna. And Dhyana plays the key role in refining Shraddha and Prajna.
As a common man or a layman, what should a common Hindu do to counter the anti-Hindu narrative predominant today in the national as well as International media?
Why just a common Hindu, common or not so common, each Hindu must follow his/her Swadharma. And to know what Swadharma is one must study Bhagavad Gita on a daily basis. I am convinced that this process would extract the best out of each one of us for the wellbeing of Dharma and therefore for the wellbeing of humanity.
4. To confront anti-Hindutva narratives, it is important to study the Shrimadbhagawadgeeta daily

The Hindu ecosystem exists, excellent roadmaps also exist, albeit in pockets. Social media is a great enabler in making folks aware of these best practices. The decay begins with fear when individual organisations (spiritual, intellectual, advocacy, media, legal or otherwise) start looking at other organisations, either in their own domains or even in other domains, as their competition. My suggestions to organisations to come above this self-centric perspective (see below). This applies equally well to individual Hindu intellectuals. If you can cooperate with others, go for it. If you cannot, follow your own path.

Your suggestions/action points to awaken millennials, Gen Z and the younger generations
If Hindu intellectuals, Gurus and Swamis, organizations consider themselves as perfect and try to preach and teach, whether to millennials, Gen Z or to whoever, it will decidedly fail. Irrespective of the audience, it is critical for Hindu intellectuals and organizations to be truthful of their expertise, in its depth and in its limitations. As long as they don’t overstate their experience, millennials, Gen Z and the younger generation would find great connect with these intellectuals and organizations.
Any other points that you wish to help awaken the Hindu society
Read voraciously. Study Darshanashastra. Learn scientific acumen, logical reasoning skills and problem-solving skills. Build prosperity and simplicity. Set goals and work hard to achieve them. Even when the actual goals may or may not be achieved, a lot more is achieved without one realizing it.
Research on the Timeline Measurement of the Ramayan and Mahabharat

1. Determining the Timeline of the Mahabharat

In his book ‘When Did the Mahabharat War Happen ? – The Mystery of Arundhati’, Dr Oak has studied the astronomical references in the Mahabharat written by Maharshi Ved Vyasa. According to his research, the Mahabharat took place in 5561 BCE. The special mention of Arundhati-Vasistha is significant – during that time, Arundhati was ahead of Vasistha, which is an extremely rare astronomical occurrence, and this is what is noted in the Mahabharat.
2. The Timeline of the Ramayan
In his book ‘The Historic Rama’, Dr Oak examined the astronomical references in the Valmiki Ramayan and determined the approximate date of the events in the Ramayan. According to his research, the events in the Ramayan occurred around 12209 BCE. By studying references to seasons, planetary positions, solar and lunar eclipses, and constellations in the text, he reached these conclusions.
3. Research Methodology
A. Using modern astronomy software to verify the alignment of planets and stars.
B. Verifying geographical, archaeological, and textual evidence.
C. Maintaining internal consistency and logical coherence within the texts.
Dr Oak actively works on presenting history from an Indian perspective through various podcasts, conferences, and ‘Indic’ platforms.
